Large areas of the region are covered with beautiful pine forests, mostly ‘Red Pine’ at sea level and lower altitudes. Another tree of particular interest is the ‘Liquid Amber’ tree - it is found nowhere else in the world except Mugla province and Rhodes, and is known for it’s aromatic sap.
In the spring and autumn the forest floors are sprinkled with wild cyclamen and crocus flowers, and the hillsides are colourful with of many varieties of wild flowers.
The area around Baba Mountain, near Fethiye, is particularly important for plant life, as it is home to 750 different species, many of which are endemic and / or under threat. |
